Fiction entries. BPN entries
'late' entries, which were not judged in the comp.

AND THE RESULTS ARE...

As well as giving comments, John and I have rated each entry on a scale of 1 to 10 for Horror (both of us) Originality (john) and Truth portability (me) . John declared that if he didn't see it as horror then he wouldn't mark it for originality, seeing as this was a horror comp.
As a result some of the scores are a bit low… Sorry… but at least you don't live with this :)

Enjoy… or something...

Gnawing on the Knowledge from Andrewthotep, (BPN)

Sues comments.
Tempting to run as a demo game, but the high lethality might be a problem for introducing new players to sla (ah well may be not!).
I'd he half tempted to run it as a 'christmas special' and leave them until new year before giving them 'you get out of the shower' option : But then I run parallel worlds so I can :)
I love the non linear nature of the plot, using flash backs is inspired.
No defined 'truth' is nice, the source of the 'infection' could be played with - making it a bitter thing rather than a bio weapon, so that makes it nicely truth portable.

UBO-5A7HLA - Ubbo sathla. 5 points deducted straight away from originality. (Sorry but I said he would be hard to please) But he gets back a point for killing the pc's premise.
Has potential, problem is it is a PC killer.
Meets my definition of horror.

Campaign by Jarrod Carnforth

Sues comments.
There are lots of interesting BPN ideas here, and the two interweaving plot lines make for a fun exchange, also stops players guessing the long term plot too easily :) Be interesting to run two groups through this with them getting different BPN's but letting them discuss what has happened in character to see if they can work out "the big picture" between them.
Obviously most of these BPN's are basic outlines which the ref is encouraged to fiddle with and fill out for themselves, making it easy to tailor to your wop style.
The use of a character maguffin for the Maximum light story arc, the idea of dealing with kidnapped people that are obviously being used for some nasty experiment, and the encounter with thresher suits all have some horror potential which could fit regardless of your group preferred style of horror.
Cute. But needs lots of work to be finished off, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Johns Comments
Not a bad idea, hence the highish originality marks, which would have been higher if I didn't detect resemblance to the better parts of Guyver. Low horror because of the complexity Players might not realise what is going on , and this is required for the horror to be full. Bright players with a 'sympathetic' ref would enjoy this, others would lose it.

Nothings Ever Simple by Gavin watkins. (BPN with maps and fiction)

Sues comments.
I love the combination of fiction and the BPN, really helps to set the scene and get a feel for what is going on. Maps are nicely done and generally useful for other things, even if you are not using the BPN.
The idea of ravenous swarming rats has potential to be very scary, although its glossed over at the beginning. - given they have run through an area of 'habitation' there is lost potential there for some freeky scenes of half eaten bodies just to get the ops on edge. Still its something the ref can add in themselves.
Personally the concept of the 'beasty' is let down by the 'alien' DNA thing, which feels like a bit of a cope out, However it does leave a nice 'gap' which can be used to tailor the adventure to your personal 'Truth'.
The intelligence of the creature makes it really useful, - Like that classic bit from Aliens "What do you mean they cut the power, they are just animals." - Not sure the stats reflect this Diag 4? After all it is carefully picking off the hardest first rather that just taking any stragglers.
The two part nature of the adventure gives it an nice element of longevity. Also slips it into an ongoing campaign nicely. The reporter character is a nice addition to any campaign as a contact for the squad, (for as long as she lasts) and easily replaced if you already have a similar character you don't mind loosing. - Push good looking reporters are 10 a cred anyway so one more won't hurt :)
That slow moving lift has so much potential.
"That file you found on the Dragon..."
"Yeah?"
"Did it mention anything about its ability to lay eggs?"

nice..
The door problem leaves the party with the wonderful option of self sacrifice to save mort… Not that SLA are going to let them… but it would be nice if they considered it. Nice 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' element at the end.
Over all it has a lot of potential, the fiction gives any ref a lot of guidance for the feel of the BPN and would make it an easy scenario to run well for even a novice SLA ref.

Johns Comments
Alien/ Aliens rip off, Whilst it has the potential for horror stalking, given the average armour and equipment of your average sla op. It shouldn't be too much of a problem. It's a gun fest and the horror is external. There is nothing to confront the players.

Night of the LAD's by Andrewthotep. (BPN - anti entry)
Sues comments.
Ohh this has so much potential for pc's running around screaming like headless chickens :)
Once again the source is open so the BPN can easily be tailored to your pet truth.

Johns Comments
It's a rip off, but its not a bad rip off, more splatter than horror, whilst night of the living dead wasn't really splatter. Still it's good.

Silence, by Nick Barnes. (fiction)

Sues comments.
OOOO I like this sort of stuff - Ok I'm biased, a lot of the short pieces I write are 'poetry'. It has a nice spooky feel to it.
That said, I am not sure how useful it would be to a ref trying to bring horror into his game. I suppose as a form of inspiration it might help, but any attempt to use it in game would be dangerous. Its so cannon truth I'm not sure I can put it on the site, but its I think it is just this side of safe. Like a lot of such pieces you need to know the truth to see the truth . I might be tempted to use it as a hand out for a game where the players knew the truth just to see them panic- but other than that its pretty but not terribly useful.

Johns Comments
Not sure if it is horror, Its different. Intriguing.. As fiction it is great, as horror, I'm not sure…

Hopelessness by Kris Steel (fiction)

To be fair when Kris sent me this he wasn't sure if it was an entry to the comp. I liked it and I was short on entries at the time so I decided to include it.

Sues comments. This is a nice descent into 'white-hood'
Given its necanthrope/ ebon focus it is not generally useful, although the trip to the war world widens it a little, however to give a ref ideas of how to deal "getting close" it could proven invaluble. The feeling of fear of getting close the events leave the surviving ebon is sweet - a very nice 'what I am becoming' horror.
There are a few little comments that fix it to a particular wop - mostly the "She would not like the night ahead of her, he would see to it personally that the dream demons got through to the arrogant little bitch." which implies a definite source of the demons.

Johns Comments
Couldn't find any horror. Nice sla fiction, but not horror. There is moral deacy, which is good, but I don't count that as horror. Sorry.

THE DOWRY by Jarrod Carnforth (BPN)
Sues comments. Well, It's a nice BPN but… Its kind of lacking in the horror aspect. Ok waking up with a gore cannon / necanthrope standing over you is scary, but that is a threat for after the BPN, not during it.
The BPN itself has potential, but with 2 annoying NPC's along for the ride I can see a lot of work falling on the ref. Also the BPN whilst having hints at things to happen is little more than a concept waiting to be fleshed out.
Could be worth running if you are stuck for an idea one night.
