Meat for the Beast has explict Adult content, both sexual and violence. I am aware that that is not every ones cup of tea, so to allow people to 'follow the plot' whilst avoiding exposure to material that might upset or offend I present this plot synopsis. Enjoy.
Warren and Kirsty are sent up to Edinburgh to make preparations in case the forthcoming referendum see's Scotland slip from the rest of the UK. On the way up they encounter 2 'stowaways' who arose Kirsty's 'Cat' - the serpent of lust that inhabits her. War rescues them and kirsty reveals that she has recently split from James so 'The Cat' has not been 'fed' for some time.
Once in their hotel War leaves Kirsty setting up the equipment and contacts Paul Randal - a friend and occasional lover of his. Paul is based in the city, but spends most of his time on the moors hunting Black Dog and similar demonic incursions. They meet for a drink and it is clear something is on Paul's mind, but he does not share it with War. War and Kirsty go out into the city to explore and start their survey. They both sense that they are being followed, but continue with the task at hand. They discover a strange anomaly at the lower end of the Royal Mile, which Kirsty identifies as the Ghost of a Building. They return to the hotel to call it in. During the phone call North instructs War to 'bring Randal in' and persuade him to join the asylum.
The following morning, whilst War is being as 'persuasive' as he can be with Paul, Paul reveals that the only thing that would make him 'sign up' is Kirsty. War returns to the hotel but discovers that Kirsty 'has gone out sight seeing' and not come back. Whilst looking for her he receives a phone call from Old Cloutie (A local manifestation of Satan) who reveals that he has kidnapped Kirsty. War is about to call the office when Paul finds him and confesses that he knew the devil was out and about and that is why he was in the city - and that he needed Kirsty as bait to trap the beast.
They call in to London to be told that another 'spell slinger' has been dispatched to assist them in retrieving Kirsty. When they meet him at the station they discover it is James Goddard - Kirsty's husband. He is a little annoyed with War for loosing his wife, but as they talk they realise that North may have deliberately sent Kirsty to get captured.
As James examines the equipment Kirsty sets up, they realise that it is highly unusual for her to use the Techno magic that she was employing and War asks if the rig can be used to find her. Using some info on Kirsty's own machine James is able to determine that 'The Cat' is in Regency Gardens, shortly before the rig explodes.
The three of them head out to the gardens. Noises lead them to a statue consisting of the stones representing Scotland's regions arranged in a circle. James berated Paul for not mentioning the statue earlier - given its potential of occult use. With in the circle, Kirsty, possesed by 'The Cat' is having an orgy with 2 of Clouties minions, whilst the Sidhe over sees the proceedings.
Cloutie joins them and taunts how the ritual will be completed with the blood of a mortal. Fearing his wife is in danger, James runs into the circle and as all the items required for the ceremony is in place, the ward seals him and the Fae in. It becomes very clear that Cloutie intends to use James to finish the ritual, but trapped on the out side there is little Paul or War can do to help him. Paul tries to distract the fae to buy James some time, and in response Cloutie claims that Paul is actually one of his minions, which Paul denies.
James manages to dispel Cloutie's glamour and reveal his Satanic form, which really annoys the devil. 'The Cat' declares she has had enough and is going to kill James. War shoot at Cloutie, and although the bullet does not penetrate the ward, the noise is enough to make the Fae duck. In the moment of distraction James stabs himself in the leg, severing his femoral artery, and as the blood hits the stones to complete the ritual, he claims the land for North.
The ritual completed the ward drops, and realising he has been thwarted Cloutie escapes. War kills one of this minions and the sidhe as Paul pulls James to safely and tries to stop the bleeding. War aims his next shot at the Cat but finds it hard to shoot 'Kirsty'. He realises that he has little choice and pulls the trigger.
The bullet instead slaughters Clouties other minion, which had turned invisible and was standing between him and Kirsty, in the assumption that it was a 'safe' place. Both of its sexual playthings dead, the Cat retreats and Kirsty is able to regain control. She uses her magic, and power drawn form both War and Paul, to save her husband.
North arrives and reminds both War and Paul that they still need to deal with the devil. Paul realises what has just happened and that North now controls the country, and my extension himself, and 'has a bit of a rant'- until War points out that option two was Cloutie and his retinue, who obviously had some fairly unpleasant plans for the place.
War and Paul head into the city and locate Cloutie at a poluted fountain on the site of the old pool. War commands him to reveal himself, using Norths name to back up and Cloutie's glamour fails. Paul challenges to explain his earlier claim that Paul was his, and Cloutie taunts him by stating that the real Paul Randal died after the wolf attack, and that he was a fae trapped in that role. Paul berserks and attacks Cloutie, eventually destroying him, but the damage is done and he starts to doubt his own existence.
War carries Paul back to the Scotsman, and eventually manages to persuade him that having been Paul Randal for so long he has every right to the identity. The declaration strengthens the Fae, but he declares he intends to find out more about what he was, and happily accepts the title of Prince that Cloutie alluded to. James interrupts them to tell them about Kirsty. War persuades Kirsty to leave the sauna and takes her to James so they can start to sort out their relationship problems.
The following morning, leaving James and Kirsty in the hotel, Paul and War go to investigate the 'ghost house'. They discover the woman in the shop below is actually an Asylum employee. She gives them access to the 'office' which is staffed by Fae tasked by North to perform the essential tasks to keep the office going. War takes Paul up to the top floor and discovers that it is the same top floor to the London office. They have a brief de brief with North, and are cautioned to make sure they turn Right instead of left on leaving his office - or they will have a long walk back. War bemoans the fact that he bought a first class return ticket, when a single would have sufficed, and Paul takes him back to Edinburgh for a consolatory drink.
